Description and specific excellence
The CNR carries out scientific and technological research activities through the institutes described below:
-SPIN (Institute for Superconductors, Innovative Materials and Devices)
The Institute carries out advanced research in the field of superconductors and other innovative materials with regard to their application in the electronics and energy sectors. The Institute develops high-level experimentally and theoretically-based studies in these areas, with particular attention to the synthesis of new materials, artificial and advanced characterization of the materials with atomic-scale control. The Institute is also engaged in developing micro and nano-electronic devices for superconducting quantum computing and other applications as well as innovative devices based on oxides and organic and nano-structured materials. In addition, it plays an important role in the creation of superconducting tapes and cables for power applications in the fields of biomedical and high-energy physics.
-IBF (Institute of Biophysics)
The Institute carries out research on the structure and mechanisms of biological systems within the sectors of molecular biology, bioenergetics, physics, biochemistry, genetics, physiology and bioinformatics. The research also covers complementary areas (proteins, nucleic acids, supermolecular structures, nerve cells, higher plants, micro-organisms, cultured cells) and uses innovative methods and equipment, following an integrated and multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond the purely descriptive reading of the biological processes . IBF also makes application products (bio-devices, bio-sensors) and develops innovative processes for biocompatibility testing, drug screening, the acquisition of biomedical signals and for the monitoring of environmental biological impact.
-IMEM (Institute of Materials for Electronics and Magnetism)
The Institute is active in the field of power generation from fossil fuel emissions and high efficiency ultra-contained gas emissions and pollutants. The Institute's activities are interdisciplinary and combine refined methods of growth, synthesis and study of materials with the theoretical modeling and construction of prototype devices. IMEM is highly qualified in the field of design of semiconductor nanostructures for the new generation of photovoltaic systems and devices magnetic and superconducting technologies for magnetic refrigeration at room temperature, and sensors for high-efficiency electric cars.
-IENI (Institute for Energy and Interphases)
The Institute is characterized by a highly interdisciplinary-oriented science and technology of materials. In particular, it develops functional nano-structured ceramic materials for the production or recovery of energy or in electronic devices; metals and alloys smelted with other metallic and ceramic materials. The Institute has a historical electrochemical vocation and develops ceramic and polymeric materials in bulk or thin film for various devices, thermoelectric materials, new materials for batteries and supercapacitor nanofluids to improve thermal exchanges. It is also active in the field of advanced metallurgy in terms of the study of shape memory alloys, thermoelectric materials, metal foams and composites for applications in energy and transport. Further research areas include those related to the study of mechanical behavior and micro-structural materials for high-performance, technology and fluid dynamics of combustion in engines or industrial burners and diagnostics based on laser spectroscopy, also used in the assessment of the environmental impact of smoke and powders.
-ISSIA (Institute of Intelligent Systems for Automation)
The Institute’s activities are centered around the development of intelligent systems to improve quality of life, competitivity and production methods of firms; environmental monitoring, usability of cultural heritage and the efficiency of public administrations. It is also involved in the study and development of complex smart systems in many areas including computer science (information processing), physics (optics and light-matter interaction), cybernetics (neural computational models), electrical and electronic (sensors, actuators and control) and mechanical engineering, and artificial intelligence.
-IMATI (Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies)
The Institute conducts research in numerous areas of mathematics, computer science and their applications in the fields of differential modeling for engineering, life sciences, mathematical statistics, the geometric modeling and graphics computational technologies for information processing architectures and high-performance computing.
-IEIIT (Institute of Electronics and Information Engineering and Telecommunications)
The Institute possesses advanced competencies in the field of information engineering and, therefore, in the disciplines of computer science, signal processing, telecommunications, systems engineering, automatic control, applied electromagnetics, electronics and photonics. The results of the research conducted by the IEIIT fall within the scope of the innovation process of the production system, including the development of soft products (algorhythms, simulation models, methods and techniques synthesis) and hard products (new architectures of devices, sensors and subsystems) that are useful for applications in the industrial sector of telecommunications and earth and space science observations.
